Memorialwoods program

The Dakota Tree Project, in partnership with the City of Albuquerque, is excited to introduce the MemorialWoods Program—an initiative that replaces the city’s current individual memorial tree program with memorial tree groves throughout the community.

The MemorialWoods Program will establish a network of sustainable, rain-harvesting memorial tree groves in each Albuquerque voting district. Each grove will contribute to the enhancement of our city's green spaces, and create serene wooded settings to remember loved ones.

Here's what sets the MemorialWoods Program apart:

1. **Sustainable Urban Green Spaces**: With a strong emphasis on sustainability, each grove will incorporate rainwater harvesting systems. These eco-friendly spaces will contribute to Albuquerque's environmental health and resilience.

2. **Community Engagement**: Community members will have the opportunity to actively participate in tree planting events, fostering a sense of ownership and connection to these groves.

3. **Memorialization**: The program offers a unique ways to remember and honor loved ones. Community members can purchase memorial nameplates, allowing the community to celebrate the enduring impact of loved ones.

4. **Collaboration**: Each City Councilor will contribute to the program by identifying and funding the infrastructure for a grove within their respective district. The Dakota Tree Project will oversee the site selection, transformation, and development of the groves.

5. **Long-Term Maintenance**: To ensure the longevity of these groves, ongoing maintenance agreements will be arranged with the appropriate city agencies.

With three initial sites to be chosen by September 2023 and planting in early 2025, the MemorialWoods Program is a tribute to both the community and environment of Albuquerque. As we plant trees in honor of our loved ones, we are also sowing the seeds for a greener, more sustainable future. We invite you to join us on this journey, creating a living legacy that will enhance our city and honor our loved ones for generations to come.
